Newlywed Ruminations: The Closet Caper

4 01 2010

I love my house, but I have a love/hate relationship with my closet. It’s facing an exterior wall. It IS the exterior wall. Translation: that closet is cold as hell, er, Antarctica. Said closet opens into the master bedroom. When said closet door is open, the two degree air wafts into bed, over our heads. No amount of space heating or electric blankets is working for a sista right now. The closet must be fixed.

Said fix requires taking out the wall and installing insulation in that closet. Then, have to hang new drywall, repaint and THEN hang the closet installation system. My cousin, a contractor, says the hubby and I can do this ourselves for no more than $500 and a bunch of dust. “Just pull out your such-and-such saw and your so-and-so blower to fill in the insulation,” he says. “It’ll only take you a few hours.”

Um. We don’t own a saw nor do we own the such-and-such blower. Translation: We must hire someone to insulate this closet asap. In hindsight it wasn’t a good idea to buy a crib with an exterior-facing closet. However, what’s done is done. But the closet is SO important. It holds your clothes! The clothes are two degrees! Granted, there is no HINT of mold in that closet but boy, are those clothes crisp and fresh in the morning. The hubby has taken to hanging them in a guest room closet so that they’ll warm up.

We are now searching for a contractor. Yes, we know we could do it ourselves. Yes, we know that small jobs aren’t jobs that contractors like to do. Got it. But tearing down walls isn’t our thing, and upon investigation at Home Depot, it sounds like this kind of work is more than a day job for a newbie. We were already told that unless we’re ready to spend $5,000, no one will do the job. But we’re thinking that there has GOT to be someone who is willing to do a small job for cold, hard, cash.

We put out a call to our friends, asking for carpenter recommendations. So far we’ve been told to check up on Albert, Wilks and Javier, all of whom will be out this week for estimates. Hopefully they won’t say that they have a $5,000 minimum.

The adventures in owning a home continue…
